To Whom Do You Belong? Vicinati. Ethnographies of Objects is a permanent exhibition showcasing a significant portion of the ethnographic collections from the National Museums of Matera. The exhibition was inaugurated at the monumental complex of the former San Rocco Hospital, within the spaces of the Church of Christ.

The term Vicinati evokes a shared space where people and objects coexist, blending their practical and utilitarian functions with aesthetic, artistic, and identity-based elements. In this narrative setting, all forms of Lucanian folk art find their place. Vicinati brings together collections that form the entire ethnographic heritage of the National Museums of Matera, consisting of around 600 objects dating from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. These artifacts tell the story of Lucanian agro-pastoral life and culture, and after extensive restoration work, they are now being returned to the community.

The exhibition, which presents a significant part of the collection, is organized into various sections, each representing the contexts in which the artifacts were used. This division, which is mainly indicative, is designed to enhance the visitor’s experience through a thematic journey that seeks to showcase the entire ethnographic collection of the National Museums of Matera.
