In 2021, Palazzo Lanfranchi underwent a major restoration project, which included the renovation and enhancement of both its interior and exterior spaces, as well as the collections on display. Three years later, the Museum of Matera is once again open to the public, offering a completely renewed cultural experience.
The museum’s reception is now managed by a new ticket office with an information point and an adjoining bookshop.
On the ground floor of Palazzo Lanfranchi, new rooms have been inaugurated, dedicated to two great masters of the 20th century: Carlo Levi (Turin, 1902 – Rome, 1975) and Luigi Guerricchio (Matera, 1932-1996). Special attention is given to Levi’s large canvas, Lucania ’61, which has been reinstalled to provide more accessible viewing and better understanding for visitors.
The first floor is divided into two exhibition sections: Art of the Territory, featuring a selection of local sacred art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, and the prestigious collection of Neapolitan painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, collected in the second half of the 19th century by Camillo d’Errico from Palazzo San Gervasio, Potenza. This collection is displayed in a completely revamped setting.
The new lighting design has been developed to meet various functional needs, ensuring the public an optimal experience in viewing the artworks. It has been designed to provide full formal and cultural compatibility, adaptability for future uses, energy efficiency, and straightforward, sustainable management and maintenance.
One of the main innovations of this reopening is the introduction of three new multimedia rooms. The first is an immersive room that, through a combination of art, creativity, and artificial intelligence, offers a unique interaction with Carlo Levi’s paintings. The visit to the rooms dedicated to Luigi Guerricchio’s works is introduced by a video narrated in the first person by the artist himself, designed to capture the audience’s attention. Finally, the Camillo d’Errico gallery room offers a multisensory experience enriched by a full-wall projection, making the experience of the renowned collection even more engaging.
