The exhibition “Pompei@Madre” pairs Pompeii’s archaeological finds with modern and contemporary artworks and creates a dialogue on the passage of time and the transience of life, a journey through time and space.
The path of the exhibition is conceived and structured therefore as a circular walk between works, artifacts, documents and tools connected to the history of the various excavation campaigns in Pompeii compared with modern and contemporary works and documents.
Divided into two sections, the exhibition pairs, on the one hand, Pompeii’s “archaeological matter” with works that in some way are similar, while, on the other hand, it creates a direct relationship with the works found in the permanent collection of the Madre.
The exhibition is also a reflection on the transience of life that finds its climax in the room where some anthropomorphic memorial stones from Pompeii weave an intimate and stunning rapport with the permanent installation by Rebecca Horn, where round mirrors slowly move in front of cast iron skulls and light bulbs on walls, thus creating reflections of great emotional impact.
